Free Women

Normally a Freewoman infrequently leaves her home. She sometimes owns her own shop, but slaves do her errands for her. It is dangerous for her to be on the street alone.

Her dress consists of five or more face veils and the Robes of Concealment.

The Robes of Concealment usually consist of several layers of opaque cloth, perhaps heavy brocade. They are ankle length, with a high collar. The robes are accompanied by opaque hose and gloves. A Freewoman showing an ankle in public would be considered very flashy and could very well get her collared. The five basic veils in the order they are donned:

The Last Veil....also known as the privacy veil and is worn every where but in the private chambers of the freewoman.

The Veil of Citizeness....is worn over the Last Veil and is worn whenever she leaves her chambers for any reason.

The Pride Veil.... is worn around her own home. Unlike the first two which are sheer, the Pride Veil is opaque and conceals her features.

The House Veil....is worn when she is in the company of anyone who is not of her household.

The Street Veil....is worn when she leaves the house. It is made of heavy brocade and is equipped with numerous pins and fastening devices.

Taking these veils from a Freewoman is called face-stripping. Even the loss of her Robes of Concealment are not on the same level as losing her face veils. Most Freewomen, given a choice, would choose death over being face stripped. A Freewoman has no restrictions on what weapons she carries, other than no technological items sanctioned by the Priest Kings. Her usual choice would be a dagger or a long poisoned needle. Either can be easily concealed in the many folds of her robes. If at any time a Freewoman draws a weapon against a Warrior, other than in self defense, she places herself within his capture rights. This means she could be easily overpowered and enslaved. She would be wise to never casually draw a weapon, not even to place on a table.

A Freewoman's mate is called a Free Companion. A Freewoman is the only one to bare children who are free. Freepersons sign a contract for one year at a time. The contract must be re-newed yearly. If not, the Companionship is dissolved. This contract is also void if either are enslaved.

A final word of warning....a Freewoman must always conduct herself with virtue, integrity, honor and nobleness. She is an object to be admired and pursued...never the pursuer. If she acts in any way like a slave, she could find she has become one.

I wish you well,
